What is the Keto Diet?

The keto diet is one of the hottest topics right now but what exactly is it? The ketogenic diet is when you reduce your carbohydrate intake and replace it with a high amount of fat while keeping your protein intake moderate.

Typically, when following a keto diet you would keep your carbohydrate intake to 20grams or under per day. This carb reduction puts your body into a metabolic state called ketosis which is when there isn’t enough glucose in your body for energy so it then burns stored fat instead.

How did the Keto diet start?

The ketogenic diet was developed almost 100 years ago to help treat epilepsy when researchers discovered that following this diet helped to reduce the amount of seizures that patients were experiencing. However, they also discovered that patients were also experiencing reduced body fat, cholesterol and blood sugar levels.
